What happened?

Modine has identified a potential issue affecting certain Airedale by Modine ClassMate® and SchoolMate® heating and cooling units, involving possible water contact with a component in the blower assembly that, if not addressed, could lead to a thermal event. Upon identification, Modine promptly notified customers through its sales channels and implemented a comprehensive remediation plan in coordination with CPSC.

At this time, no injuries have been reported. Remediation has been completed for substantially all affected units in the United States, and efforts are ongoing to address remaining units as quickly as possible while minimizing disruption to customers and local communities.

What has Modine done to address the issue?

Upon identifying the issue, Modine promptly notified customers through its sales channels, implemented a comprehensive remediation plan, and began working cooperatively with the CPSC. Remediation has been completed for substantially all affected units in the United States, with ongoing efforts to address remaining units as quickly as possible while minimizing disruption. As part of the recall remedy, additional fuses have been installed by certified Modine technicians within the affected units’ blower assemblies that are working properly to help mitigate the risk of electrical arcing. For blower assemblies that are not working properly or show signs of a thermal event, a technician will disable the affected blower assembly until a new free replacement blower assembly is available for installation by the end of the summer.

How many units are affected? Where are the affected units located?

The issue affects approximately 6,500 units sold in North America, including models CMD, CMP, CMS, SMG, and SMW with ventilation configurations C, D, E, H, J, K, N, or P. Remediation has been completed for substantially all affected units in the United States, with ongoing efforts to address remaining units as expeditiously as possible while minimizing disruption to customers and communities. Modine continues to actively manage and complete the remediation process.

Is there a risk my Airedale by Modine [SchoolMate / ClassMate] system could catch on fire?

If a field technician has already addressed the issue, the unit should be operating as intended and no further action is required. If the issue has not yet been addressed, we can assist in coordinating next steps and connecting you with the appropriate customer service representative; outreach efforts are ongoing to schedule remediation as promptly as possible.

If timely access for remediation cannot be arranged, Modine recommends temporarily disabling the OA/EA ventilation fans within the unit until service can be completed; written instructions can be provided upon request. Alternatively, the unit may be temporarily disabled by turning the internal disconnect switch to the “off” position.

Can we continue to use our unit if the OA/EA ventilation fans within the unit have been disabled?

Yes. The unit can still be used if the ventilation fan has been disabled or turned off.

When did Modine first become aware of this issue? Why is the Company taking so long to make a formal announcement?

Modine became aware of the issue earlier this year and promptly notified customers through its sales channel partners while implementing a comprehensive remediation plan. Remediation efforts are being carried out in accordance with the established process and timeline coordinated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The Company continues to work actively with the CPSC to complete remediation of all remaining units as expeditiously as possible.

Have all school districts and users been notified?

Upon identifying the issue, Modine promptly notified known customers through its sales channel partners and initiated a comprehensive remediation plan. Remediation has been completed for substantially all affected units in the United States, with ongoing efforts to address remaining units as expeditiously as possible while minimizing disruption to customers and communities.

Has anyone been harmed or is there a potential risk of harm?

Modine maintains safety as its paramount directive and presently possesses no evidence of any reported injuries associated with this matter. Although the vast majority of affected units within the United States have been successfully remediated, Modine strongly advises that until a certified Modine technician can execute final repairs, users should temporarily disable the OA/EA ventilation fans or switch the internal disconnect to the “off” position, for which written instructions are available upon request. We remain steadfast in our commitment to resolving this matter expeditiously and urge affected parties to contact our designated internal resources to promptly schedule the necessary remediation services.

Why were there additional fires after the issue had already been identified and investigated?

Upon discovery of the issue, Modine promptly initiated user notification through authorized sales channels and implemented a comprehensive remediation protocol. Furthermore, the Company maintains active, ongoing cooperation with the CPSC to ensure the complete remediation of all affected units and to mitigate any further disruption.
